Deeper! China warns of retaliation against any country that joins hands with the US in the tariff war

China has warned that it will take retaliatory measures against countries that cooperate with the United States in an attempt to isolate China, according to a statement from the Chinese Ministry of Commerce on Monday, April 21, 2025. The warning comes after reports that the administration of US President Donald Trump plans to use tariff negotiations to pressure its partners over trade ties with Beijing.

China firmly opposes any party reaching an agreement that harms China’s interests. If this happens, China will not accept it and will take countermeasures in an equitable manner,” the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said. The announcement came after the United States imposed a 145% tariff on Chinese imports in response to China’s 125% tariff on American goods.

During Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Vietnam, Malaysia and Cambodia last week, he called for joint efforts to oppose tariffs and “unilateral harassment.” Since Trump imposed tariffs on China during his first term, China has increased trade with Southeast Asia, which is now China’s largest trading partner in the region

If the United States continues to threaten to impose tariffs, China will take necessary measures,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Zhiyan said at a press conference. Analysts believe China could respond with additional tariffs on politically sensitive U.S. exports, such as agricultural products, as well as expanded export controls on key raw materials.

The trade war between the United States and China has caused growing concern among other countries due to the global impact of supply chain disruptions. Some countries, such as Vietnam, have sent delegations to the United States for negotiations, while others, such as the European Union, are considering their own retaliatory measures.
